Rio Futaleufu y un poco Argentina

"Buenas dias en Argentina!", that's what they should have said at the border. Instead the took a furious look us - 4 dirtback kayakers. We had just woke up about 2km away from the border. After a while of dealing with officials and filling out forms we made it to Argentian and drove pass a moon like landscape caused by a volcanic eruption a few month back.

To make a long story short - just look at the photos:

Huckfest on the Palguin River

„Chile! Things here will always work out – but different then you think!“ That is the lesson we learned so far. But that is the way we travel anyway. Leaving NZ ended with trouble at the airport. Well, we were flying with three kayaks and this is always some trouble. In the end it worked out and we could turn a “No, we cannot take them on the plane.” into a “Yes, but we have to charge you for one kayak.”Within a few hours we set you feet on Chilean ground.

Different country, different language, different people and different culture. While sorting out the shuttle to your hostel in Santiago Jakub Sedivy ran into us on the airport. It turned out, that he is staying in the same place. Great! Check in at the hostel and then grab a beer and hang at the pool. After a short round through the city we got back with two bottles of Pisco and a big coke. Again at the pool we were figuring out what to do on New Years Eve. It turned out, that everyone went to party in Vina del Mar and Valparesia wihich is about 1,5h busride from Santiago. Plans are set! Get ready, get to the bus station and get on a bus. Getting on the bus wasn’t that easy. It was sold out. Walking out of the station little disappointed guys from different buses were running around trying to get some more people for the last buses to Vina del Mar. Sold! Two of us had to ride on the floor, but that’s alright when you got Pisco-Coke. We actually made to Vina in time - 11:30pm.

20h later we were all back in Santiago and decided to stay one more night. After another day in Santiago we were off to Pucon. Taking the night bus we arrived early at about 8am in Pucon. Jasper picked us up at the bus stop and while having breakfast we managed to find a place to stay. We got to the Kayak Hostel, put our bags in the dome (that’s the big tent we are staying in) and get ready to get on the river.It’s a big crew. We put on the Palguin River to run the whole thing – upper, middle and lower Palguin. Jasper was leading us down the run, which is one waterfall after the other. It was a huckfest, with about 14 people running the 70ft Middle Palguin. Shortly after the drop Jasper and Flo got double pinned. With two boats stucked they decided to wet exit. While doing this Jasper unlucky dislocated his shoulder. This is bad news. We tried to put it back in place but failed. Hiking out was a little mission but we managed to stop a car right away as we got to the street.Hours later we all got together at Latitude – a local bar in Pucon. Paddle hart and party all night – welcome to Chile!

Xmas in NZ

With only one boat on the roof we left the South Island. For the weekend we checked in at Simon's place in Wellington. It was time to check out the nightlife of the capital. It was also time to enjoy some regular showers and to wash some cloth. It felt like coming home for a few days.

On monday we head north to the Blissstick factory to pick up a new boat. Thanks to awesome support I was looking forward to a new boat for Xmas. A short breakdown of the van forced us to stop. Which looked like a blown head gasket on the first sight was fixed by replacing the broken radiator cap. We arrived late at the factory.

Just arrived Coke and Charles invited us to join the Blissstick Xmas BBQ the next evening. The next day we helped at the factory and where getting supplies for the BBQ. In the evening most of the Blissstick Team showed up and the BBQ turned into a smashing party until early morning.
The hangover followed shortly after. A mellow day with some kayaking on the local run with Nils who showed up a day to late. The next day we started early in the morning and worked a long day to finish three boats we should take with us. I was able to do most work on my boat myself what was great. I also had the option to customize my kayak.

Finishing another boat the next morning we left the factory with 5 boats total. Well just two boats where ours.

We were off to check out Huka Falls. After a safety mission where we had to rope out Oscar it was time to hit the Hot Springs.

The next day we wanted to run Huka. But while we are having breakfast the river came up to a level we didn't want to attempt. So we drove to the Kaituna. This river is a blast. It's just fun! We stayed there over Xmas and run it 4 to 6 times a day. Never got bored.

From the Kaituna we drove to Mount Maunganui. This is where Simon grew up and his parents still live there. They welcomed us Kiwi-Style.

We had some relaxing days on the beach before it was time for us to hit Auckland to sell the van. Again it broke down on us overheating.

We thought we are fucked when the mechanics told us the head gasket is blown and there is no way we can drive it somewhere. Shortly after they offered us to buy another car and they would keep ours. This is when we realized something is wrong. Well we still could drive to Simon's place. There we found out the cooler is clogged. 12h later we had fixed the problem and drove to Auckland. 2,5 days to sell a van might be short but we managed to get rid of it the first day.

A wild night followed it was time to celebrate.

My adventure on the Kokatahi River

We attempted the Kokatahi River last Friday. We just got back to the Westcoast from our trip down south. The Kokatahi is a beautiful river close to the township of Hokitika and is a major tributary of the Hokitika River. The only way to get to the put in is by Heli. We had a crew of seven, meeting up around 11am at the take out. When we arrived there the Heli was already ready to go, so Keith and myself hurried up to get going. While strapping our boats to the Heli's rig the rest arrived. It was my first time flying in a Helicopter and I really enjoyed it.

After a couple of flights we were all at the put in. Without taking a lot of time we set up to tackle the upcoming rapids. We got downstream at a good pace.

About one or two kilometers into the run Arnd ended up swimming. Luckily Keith spotted him next to the cave on Cover Drop and got him out of there while Severin, Julian and myself bombed down the river a bit to far. With the boat stuck in the cave Arnd started walking out. The rest of the crew continued downstream.

That river is a gem. It is challenging, remote and indescribably beautiful but the last major rapid called Skateboard Ramp sent me back to reality.

Just a little bit off line I went deep into a hole and got pushed back onto the stern of my kayak. My left shoulder moved out of place and I let my paddle go and pulled the skirt. Holding my arm tight to my body I resurfaced and grabbed Keith's rope with the other hand. While holding the rope my shoulder moved back into place. Still without a stable stand my boat was floating by down the river into the next rapid. Julian was able to catch my paddle. After climbing up on the rocks I took my paddle and moved downstream with the hope to find my boat. Severin also raced after it. To make a long story short we never found the boat and about 2 hours later we reunited at the cars at take out. Just Arnd was still somewhere up in the mountains. He made it out safe the same night around midnight.

The next days we took a break from kayaking. One day we spent hiking back up the river as far as possible but didn't find either the boat or any other equipment which has been inside.

Even though it is a pain in the ass with all that equipment lost but at least I'm safe.

It was time for us to move on and we headed north to huck Maruia Falls. Well, at least Flo did!

Now it's time for the North Island! Here we come....

For the last couple days we were road trippin' down the west side of the Southern Alps here in NZ. We ran a couple of rivers on the Westcoast and then headed down south to face some big water on the Kawarau river. From there we drove even further south in the Fiordland - famous for its incredible landscape.

First rivers in NZ

After therest of our baggage arrived it was time to head to a river. Our choice was theRangitata Gorge just less than 2h south of Christchurch. We found a sweet campnext to the river. The next two days we went to run the Rangitata. We also metup with Rachel Curtis a friend from NZ. She got of work for the weekend.

From therewe drove to the Westcoast via scenic Arthur’s Pass.

While recording a timelapswe ran into some Hokitika locals on their way to the Crooked River. Spontaneouswe decided to take the opportunity of joining them. After a exhausting hikethrough deep mud and up steep hillsides we had an awesome run down the Crookedthat really put a smile on our faces. ;)

This run isreally worth the work.

Arriving in New Zealand

After a lot of trouble with our extra luggage at the Bangkok Airport, where Emirates ask for over 1000€ and we had to ship it with cargo, by the way, with Emirates, too.

We arrived in Christchurch last Saturday. Since then we got a cellphone number, enjoyed christchurch's burger places und finally bought a nice and shiny van.

Don't be gentle, it's a rental.

As the van wasn't totally suitable for our needs at that point we had to upgrade it quite a bit. We removed the rear bench first. Got roof racks and built a bed set up at a local hardware store.

Tamba Kosi

"This is my favorite river in Nepal so far. It's challenging in the upper half and a beautiful river from top to bottom!" That's my (David) opinion on the Tamba Kosi. It was our last river here in Nepal before we left to New Zealand. But let's start two days earlier. We just got into Kathmandu after a short trip to Chitwan National Park. We had already planned to leave for a linked trip to the Bhote Kosi followed by the Tamba Kosi. So we prepared everything the same evening to be ready to leave the next morning.
We started early to get some time on the river. A Taxi ride to the local bus station followed by a bus ride to Bahrabise and another bus ride up the river to the put in. All went smooth and we put on in the early afternoon.

The next day the weather had changed to rainy fog without any mountain views. While floating pass Bahrabise we were stopped by the Army Police. They informed us that a 5year old is missed and was last seen by the river and asked us to keep our eyes open for anything. We arrived at the takeout around noon and thankful didn't find a body. A minute or two later a local bus picked us up to get into the next town where we had to catch another bus for the transit to the Tamba Kosi. I was really looking forward for this river trip as it is supposed to be one of the top ones Nepal has to offer.
Arriving at the Tamba Kosi with little light left we paddled just a few hundred meters to get out of town. Like in every town we were surrounded by kids that ran after us and were laughing and shouting and joking about us crazy guys.
The next two days were a bless in kayaking. Also the weather changed again and we had a last sunny river day. At the confluence with the Sun Kosi a construction site awaited us. The highway to Kathmandu is still under construction. We paddled to the next village and were happy to hear that once a day a bus is leaving to Kathmandu.
One last bus ride and 6h later we were back in the loud, hectic and dirty capital.

Holidays in Chitwan National Park

Last week we decided to make holidays in the Chitwan National Park. So we booked a 3 days program from our Guesthouse in Pokhara and at the end we wanted to go back to Kathmandu. So far so good. Because it was cheaper we stayed outside of the park and went inside only for the activities.

After some hours bus ride we arrived at our Lodge and started with the program. The first on the list was sightseeing, which wasn't really that interesting, except maybe for a couple of Bejing chinese. The next morning we went on a jungle walk but we couldn't really see any wildlife because some people were too excited ;-). On the canoe ride we were lucky not to stay in the same boat with loud people, so we could see crocodiles and some birds. In the afternoon we had a nice elefant ride were we saw two rinhos. On the last day in the morning we had out last program, the bird watching. Witch was rather boring.

At the end of the tourist acitivities we had some nice impressions and now know that it is better to stay the whole time in the park, where are not so many tourist who disturb.

Day 20

We are traveling for 20 days now. On our latest adventure we went to kayak the Madi Khola as well as the Marsyandi Khola. The Madi and Marsyandi are easy to link and this way we avoid several hours off bus riding. We started from our base in Pokhara with a Jeep ride to the Madi Khola put in near Lamarkhet.

For this trip we teamed up with Ross from NZ. After a day of good paddling we arrived in Karputar where we were the attraction for some kids.

At 6am the next morning we caught the bus to Besishahar. From there we took another bus to Khudi. On this last busride some kids stole two carabiners out of our boats. Also we had to pay 8-times the price a Nepali pays and additional the same amount for each boat. This is not the nicest way to welcome tourists. In Khudi we stayed the night. The next day we were supposed to take the bus to Syange at 9am. The bus drove by at 8:40am and didn't stop and so we got offered a Jeep ride for 8000 Nepali Rupies (app. 80€ / $105). While we were gearing up to hike ourself the price suddenly dropped to 3000 Rupies. That's how they do business in Nepal. Kayaking down from Syange we shortly realized the high waterlevels and called it a mission after three or so rapids. The next day we spent hiking back to The Nadi Khola confluence.

From there on kayaking was possible at that level. We reached Khudi pretty quick where we reunited with Ross who had stayed here for the last days. The same day we paddled close to Besishahar. The day after down to Bimalnagar where river meets the main highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Here we got lucky the following day with catching a comfy Minibus to Pokhara with the three of us being the only customers.

"Namaste!" - That means "Welcome!", "How are you doing." and simply is a often used word on the street and when you meet people here in Nepal. Nepal that's where we are now. After arriving in Kathmandu we took the bus straight to Pokhara. Pokhara is a nice little town with quite a lot tourism. It is next to the Annapurna massive but even though you can see those mountains it is nice and warm here with banana growing next to the street.

Pokhara is the Mekka for Outdoorsports in Nepal. Paraglider, Rafter, Trekker, Climber and also kayaker are using Pokhara as a base for ther adventures. So do we. A day after we arrived we packed up our gear and head off to the lower Modi Khola. We paddled the lower Modi Khola into the Kali Gandaki. This is a 2 day trip and a nice warm up for us.

On the way back from the Kali Gandaki we got a ride with a raft company instead of using the local bus. Here in Nepal it is common to take the bus to get to the rivers and back. The bus riding is often more extreme than the kayaking.

Next to Pokhara is the Seti River. Here we did the upper Seti which is a nice fun 2h run really close.

Tomorrow we gonna leave to Nepal. So today we went for some more sightseeing. Using mainly a motorized rickshaw to get from A to B made it quick and easy. Enjoy this foto selection.

First Days In Delhi

Just two days back we were sitting at the Airport in Frankfurt, Germany.

We had just checked in all our baggage - without paying any additional charge. Although we had two kayaks, six paddles, kayaking gear, outdoor equipment and normal luggage. Happy about that smooth start of our worldtour we enjoyed our waiting time at a famous american fast food restaurant. Finally it was time for bording and shortly after we were watching movies in the air on our way to Dubai. From Dubai we flew to Delhi. Here in Delhi we are doing some sightseeing while figuring out how to get to Pokhara in Nepal.

There has been a lot going one since my last post. Thomas and I ran some drops and slides the Tora has to offer.

The same night Timo and Broschi arrived at our camp. Fired up as the always are we hit the Amot section on the Sjoa right away and put in around midnight. The supposing short run ended up in a little epic as Broschi decided to hike out after a swim and dropped his boat in the river during that action. United at the camp we had a nice BBQ. The next day we run Amot in the morning hoping to find the lost kayak. After that we drove to several Rafting companys to leave a number in case they find the boat. After we were done with the Store Ula we got the call we were hoping for. 1h later we had the kayak back but a 5 liter cag less. Fully equipped we headed to the Rauma. Here we paddled the upper section the following day. This day I injured my shoulder and had to take a break for the next 7 days. Even though the others kept on kayaking. Ulvaa, Valldola, Storelva, Strondalelvi and Raundalselvi were the program the next 5 days. Meanwhile I managed to find Kinesiotape and visited the Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on European main land.

After a couple days in Voss where I started kayaking again on the “train station section” on the Raundalselvi it was time to go to Bergen to pick up Jonas Grünewald from the airport. Back in Voss Thomas and Jonas hucked the 10m high “Nosebreaker” waterfall before we put on the lower canoyn of the Raundalselvi. For dinner we had Hot-Dogs, the Norwegian standard food. This night we drove towards the Sognedalselva. The Sognedalselva goes into the Sogne fjord, the longest fjord in Norway. After crossing the fjord by ferry we were ready to go kayaking. The Sognedalselva is famous for its triple waterfall combo and I was already looking forward to run those drops long before my trip.

Next stop was the Sjoa area. We drove up to the Store Ula again. This time with hucker Jonas Grünewald. He had a descent on the 4^th drop of the Store Ula – a 16m high drop with a technical entry and a shallow pool. Congratulations Jonas!

After two mellow days on Sjoa and Frya it was time to go big again. So we decided to drive to the Rauma river. An epic day followed. Jonas and I fired up the 20m high Mosterfossen, aka Flemming Fossen - a massive waterfall on the lower Rauma. Earlier the day we ran the upper Rauma. Exactly 15 days after I hurt my shoulder on that run.

Norway Update # one

Since one week we are in Norway. Wednesday last week I meet up with Thomas and Sandra somewhere north of Hamburg to hop on the ferry in Hirtshals, Denmark later that day.

After a 3.5h ride we left off the ramp to enter Norwegian ground. It is 2am in the morning and we are tired from the long drive. Even though we are ready to paddle the next morning on the Laks section of the Numedalslagen. After another day on the Numedalslagen at the Zambesi section we head further north to the Sjoa.

During the drive I felt that I get sick. So I took the next day off, while Sandra and Thomas paddled the Steinholt section on the Sjoa. Later that day we joined the Sjoa festival for a little bit. The day after I felt a little better and after Thomas and Sandra run the Playrun I put in to run the Amot section with Thomas. This is a fun section and my personal favorite on the Sjoa. It is that pushy big water style in a narrow canyon what I like.

After a rainy night and a lacy morning we decided to face the Ridderspranget section of the Sjoa. This section is just below the Steinholt section and probably the most difficult one on the Sjoa. During the run we decided to paddle all the way down to our camp at the Lagen, just 2km downstream the confluence. This a 41km run and we stated at about 3:30pm. Even though we arrived at the camp at 9pm and were still able to dry our gear in the sun – welcome to Norway!

After a day like this we took it a little easier and moved on to the Otta drainage were we paddled the upper Bovra. This is a short low volume fun section.

Yesterday was a full on day again with two runs down the Ostri and one run on the Pollfossen run of the Otta.

Today we are at the Tora Bora! This is a stout.

Besides all the paddleing we are having a fun time in breathtaking scenery. Lots of filming to do as well…
